When It Comes to Health and Fitness, I’m Almost Hooked: Where Are You?

variety 157

Where are you on your fitness journey?

Over the past year, I have totally amped up my health and fitness journey, thanks, in part, to blogging and meeting and reading other bloggers and their posts (respectively :-) ). As I am coming to the end of my personal training studies and thinking about scheduling my exam so that I can be a cer-tee-fied personal trainer, I’ve noticed even more how much health and fitness are a part of who I am, and not just a part of my day. The conscious learning and studying have made the difference for me.But I’ve been wondering about all of you–where does health and fitness fit into your life? I made this little scale that combines scientific ideas with my own experience and word smithing. Hope you like it and let me know in the comments where you are at on this scale. For me, I sat at “halfway there” for many years of my life, but I am basically “almost hooked”  and already morphing into a “fit freak.” :-)

1 = Totally Oblivious

Fit-what? Huh? Just gimme my Corona and pizza. And ice cream.

2 = Barely Aware

Oh, I have some friends at the office who are fit-freaks. And I think that’s cool for them, but I’m not that interested.

3 = Wannabe

I used to play basketball when I was in junior high. I should probably get back to that.

4 =Considering

I’ve been thinking about my health lately and I plan on doing something about it, but I don’t know what yet.

5 = Dipping Your Toes

I’ve been walking off and on and I try to watch what I eat, but I know I need to get a lot more consistent for any real results.

6 = Beginner

I’ve been pretty consistent about exercising for the past few months but I still have a lot of room to improve in what I eat. (or vice versa, good at watching what I eat, but still room to improve in exercise)

7 = Halfway There

I’ve been consistent about exercising (watching what I eat) the past six months (to a year) but I still need to figure out this eating (exercising) thing.

8 = Almost Hooked

I’ve got both the exercising and eating down for about the last 3 months. Feels like I’m really on my way and I’m feeling really good about myself and life in general.

 9 = Hooked

Wow! For the last six months (to a year) I’ve really overhauled my life in the health and fitness arena. I feel really great, my body has morphed into something I thought I could never achieve and I want to tell the world!

10 = Fit Freak

I’m a freaking health and fitness freak. I can’t get enough of it; most of my friends are fit freaks too and my whole life revolves around this thing.

    I am at “hooked” and I also want to train for my cer-tee-fication but got SO hung up on the anatomy. ugh. try harder, Lea.

    good job! you rock! — Lea

      Thanks Lea! Don’t think of anatomy as anatomy. Think of it in the context of the application. When I do this stretch, I am stretching “this” muscle, when I do this lift, I am working “that” muscle. I figured out that learning anatomy in the context of exercise it made it much easier. It’s the application of our knowledge of anatomy that is necessary, and interesting, after all, right? :-)

    Oh.. I’m a freak. lol. I live and breathe it, and I am sure I annoy people when I talk about it. Thank goodness I have my online friends who understand ;)

      Hahaha! You are a freak. JK. Just when it comes to fitness. I know what you mean about annoying others because you want to talk about it all the time. I’m the same way. I’m thankful for my online friends too. Thank God!!

    Is there such thing as a number called seveight? That’s where I am: right between 7 and 8…all comfy like :)

    Kudos on the cer-tee-fication :lol:

    Fit Fah-reak! haha

  5. Susan Cooper March 26, 2013 at 9:12 pm #

    I’m between 8 and 9. It all about time and travel and that really does get tin the way of things. :-)

  6. Geek Girl March 27, 2013 at 7:18 am #

    I’m still a 5 but hoping for a 6 soon. Oh well…

    • Bethany Lee March 27, 2013 at 7:32 pm #

      It’s ok. Like I told Janelle, stop dipping, start stepping and you will be on your journey. :-) You will get there. I know you will. We all go at our own pace.

  7. Martha March 27, 2013 at 7:58 am #

    Let’s just say if I had the time and unlimited resources I would be a full blown 10.
    I’m pretty comfy in the 9 zone, though… every once in awhile it’s nice to turn it off and sleep in and eat the pancake :)

    10 according to definition (i.e. been doing it consistently for 3-4 years now), but I tend to be very loose and flexible with traditional health “rules” so maybe I would be a “Fit Freak-Ish.”

  9. Jeri March 27, 2013 at 11:50 am #

    I’d put myself somewhere between beginner and halfway there… My level of physical activity is good, but could be better. Yet, the battle with tempting foods continues.

    • Bethany Lee March 27, 2013 at 7:30 pm #

      I was at that place for a long long time. I know what you mean. It’s hard.

  10. Janelle March 27, 2013 at 3:58 pm #

    Oh dear. 5 ish I’d say, these days.

    • Bethany Lee March 27, 2013 at 7:29 pm #

      Only one more step to go and you will be on your journey. :-) Stop dipping, start stepping.

    Congrats on your certification! I’m between a 5 and 6. My husband and I have been on a pretty strict diet for about a month now, and I’ve lost 15lbs since Christmas. There’s never enough time! I tend to go in phases where I’m in an exercise routine, and then I get out of it somehow. But I know you’re right, I just need to do it. Thanks!!

    I am dipping my toes. I have forever be conscious about what I eat, but barely consistent with exercise. Sometimes, I walk other times yoga motivates me. But I now I need to discipline this part of my life too. Congratulations on your certification.

  13. Glynis Jolly March 28, 2013 at 7:35 pm #

    I would say I’m at #7 – Halfway there. I have the diet down pat. However, because of minor illnesses and the disability I have, exercise is a sometimes thing. I don’t let the disability be an excuse, but it is a giant-size hurdle.

    • Bethany Jo Lee March 31, 2013 at 7:47 am #

      Wow, that’s really good, Glynis. Diet for me has been my hardest struggle. So sorry to hear that you had some illnesses and a disability to struggle through. That’s pretty powerful that you don’t let it be an excuse. Theres so much good to be said about that. Keep on truckin!

  14. Jo-Anne March 28, 2013 at 11:27 pm #

    Sitting on a chair looking at a computer screen that is were I am right now……..

      Jo-anne, you are Hilarious!

  15. Carli March 29, 2013 at 8:27 am #

    Love your scale! Whoohoo…I’m a 10.

  16. Steve April 2, 2013 at 2:54 pm #

    Love the scale. Right now I fit in either at 9 or 10. I wasn’t able to work out for several months when I was traveling a few months ago so maybe that knocks me down to an 8. Seriously, I lost a ton of muscle mass when I was there. Although recently I’ve been building it up. I’m usually a die-hard exerciser.

    8! I’ve never been in better shape!

    This has been the year of John 2.0 (or whatever # it is now).

    • Bethany Jo Lee September 23, 2013 at 11:57 am #

      Awesome! 8 is a great place to be!
