Since I have immersed myself in the blogging community, I have found a lot of great blogs to read, and even better than that, I’ve made some great friends. You can tell a lot by what a person writes, I think, and my experience only confirms that for me.
I met Christen Jackson through a mutual blogger friend, Martha, when Martha nominated both Christen and me for a blogging award. When I saw Martha’s link for Christen’s blog, I was immediately interested because of the title of her blog: CJackPlay. What a great play on her name and the stories we once learned to read by! I loved it. So I stopped in at her blog to see what she was writing about.
Christen writes a lot about beauty, fitness and also fun and easy recipes. I have tried her directions for how to do a french braid, and I have admired her images of her fingernails and toenails. I love the way Christen takes on a blogging how-to for beauty and goes all out with it with step by step directions and pictures to go along. I also like her writer’s voice, simple and full of heart–she has a teacher’s style. You can see that she is just an all around good person. She also has a facebook page, where I got to see an awesome video of her doing one of her exercise videos. That was fun.
One post, Christen wrote about these awesome leather bracelets she had made out of her husband’s old belts. I loved the idea that she was recycling something to make functional art. I knew I would never take the time to make one, though she had provided instructions on how to make them. But one day, she wrote about wanting something. I quickly commented and asked if we could do a blog-exchange (you will have to go to her blog to find out what she wanted, and received). Christen said yes!! This was a couple of months though, and Christen was getting ready to move. So we didn’t get around to completing our blog exchange until these last two weeks (I admit, it took me a week longer to get my gift sent out to her).
I was so excited when I looked in the mail and found the package from Christen! This proved it: Christen was a real live person!! I guess I already knew that, but you know. Anyhow, I tried the first one on, and it fit perfectly. She had asked me to measure my wrist so it would fit just right. I really love this one with the little button and the decoration.
The second one I got a little confused on. It had a lace up that I had to tie. So I messaged her and asked her how it worked. Why should I have been so surprised that she wrote step by step instructions on how to make it work? That is Christen’s way! I think she might be a technical writer in the making. I ended up liking this one just as much as the button one.
So, you see, fun things happen when you make friends blogging. The thing is, if I didn’t go into her blog and comment, or any of the other blogs I so love to visit, I would never make friends like this. After you exchange comments, over time, you really do get to know the people behind the blog. This is amplified even more if you “like” their Facebook page and then talk to them on their Facebook posts, or private message. As I increase my Twitter time, I’m finding the same thing is happening there. You really do get to know these people, and it makes blogging all that much more fun and enriching.
So, a blog challenge to you. First, if you haven’t made any blogging friends like this, start following some people with like interests, comment and get to know them. As you follow them, you will read about something they want or need. Suggest a blog trade, or even simply get it for them!! In the case with Christen, I must admit I was being selfish when I saw one of her wants and realized I could get one of these nifty bracelets from her if I suggested a blog trade. But I think it was ok in this instance. So give it a whirl and let me know what happens. If you’ve ever already done something like this, I’d love to hear about it.
Gotta go now, there’s a blogger I know who swears she makes excellent cookies. I’m thinking I want some.
